Some opponents of the Southwest Light Rail Transit line are saying that cutting down trees in the Kenilworth corridor will increase air pollution.
They have it backward. The major threat to local air quality is from automobiles clogging our roads and freeways. The effect of losing about 1,800 trees (6+ inches in diameter) is miniscule compared with the benefit of taking 12 million rides annually on an energy efficient electric-powered train, and leaving our carbon-emitting cars at home.
People around the world are changing the way they live in the fight against global warming. We should join them.
