It was the snow that saved the Loppet.
A 3-inch snowfall on Sunday left enough of a base on city lakes and trails that events during the Feb. 2–3 City of Lakes Loppet festival will go on as planned. Last year, a snow drought limited the weekend’s cross-country ski races to the snowmaking loop in Theodore Wirth Park.
This year, skiers will once again race between Wirth Park and Uptown. Loppet Foundation Executive Director John Munger skied the full course Monday morning to make the announcement near the Tin Fish restaurant on Lake Calhoun.
