The Loft, Utne Reader, launch new magazine

The Loft Literary Center, 1011 Washington Ave. S., and the Utne Reader have teamed up to produce Speakeasy, a new bi-monthly literary culture magazine. The first edition hit newsstands Aug. 26 with articles on corporate publishing, the place of the writer in the world, and book reviews. Said editor Bart Schneider, "Speakeasy promises to engage readers and writers in an active, vibrant dialogue that energizes and embraces a broad range of lifestyles and viewpoints." The first issue of Speakeasy is available at a newsstand price of $5 and an annual subscription rate of $24; subscription order forms can be found online at www.loft.org. The magazine is also provided to the Loft's 2,500 members.

The Pickled Parrot goes beak up downtown

The Pickled Parrot -- and its famous stone crabs -- has flown the coup.

The restaurant, located at the corner of 5th Street and First Avenue North, was scheduled to close Saturday, Aug. 31, said General manager Michael Chabot. It would relocate in Apple Valley, opening in mid-December.

"There are a number of reasons (for the move)," Chabot said. "Light rail construction has not been very friendly and light rail's not coming for a couple more years. Business has shifted."
