A public hearing on a potential whitewater and kayak park near Downtown's Lower St. Anthony Falls and its environmental and neighborhood effects will be held Wednesday Aug. 14, 6-8 p.m., in the William G. Shepherd Room of the Weisman Art Museum, 333 E. River Rd. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will sponsor the meeting.

The proposed project includes a whitewater rapids channel and trail and park adjacent to the Corps of Engineer's Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam. The new river channel would be 2,000 feet long and 40 feet wide with a vertical drop of 25 feet.

The project will include a recreational course for kayaking, canoeing and rafting, improved public river access and fishing opportunities. Construction is scheduled to being in 2004 with an estimated cost of $15 million. The project is still seeking funding.
