After months of preparatory work, the first section of Downtown track for the Hiawatha LRT line is being laid between Portland Avenue and South 5th Street.
For those who wonder what it will be like to drive, bike or walk over the track, project coordinators say it will be easier and smoother than walking over regular railroad tracks.
Hiawatha project office communications manager Karen Louise Boothe notes that the track is at-grade, meaning it doesn't sit above street level. "It's indistinguishable from driving across any other intersection," said Boothe. "Embedded track means vehicles and pedestrians can interface with the track without impediments in their path."
