Hoyt's finally goes outside

Last year, business owners along Washington Avenue North complained about lost profit due to the street's reconstruction. But J.D. Hoyt's general manager Ralph Zaudtke has found a silver lining: the restaurant's first sidewalk caf.

"We couldn't do it before because the city never gave me enough sidewalk," Zaudtke said. "The only good thing that came out of the construction -- besides the new street -- is that we have 14 feet of sidewalk now instead of 8."

Hoyt's, 301 Washington Ave. N., plans to put six to eight white-tablecloth tables along the restaurant's Washington side; Zaudtke said umbrellas are unnecessary because the area is shaded after 11 a.m. Full menu and bar service will be available.

Zaudtke hopes to have the outdoor area open by Tuesday May 21, when Hoyt's will host a $15 wine tasting to benefit the north Minneapolis Boy's and Girl's Clubs. That event runs 5-7 p.m., with free valet parking after 6 p.m.
