At the April 9 Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association meeting, the board voted unanimously in favor of a motion saying the DMNA supports having more than one councilmember represent Downtown.

The motion, introduced by board member Andrew Hauer, came in the wake of a tentative redistricting proposal that puts Downtown solely in Councilmember Lisa Goodman's Seventh Ward. Currently, Downtown is represented by councilmembers Natalie Johnson Lee (5th Ward), Goodman and Paul Zerby (2nd Ward).

Johnson Lee, who wants to keep a section of Downtown in her mostly North Minneapolis ward, thanked the DMNA for their support and offered her reasons for wanting to keep Downtown.

"Downtown really belongs to the whole city," Johnson Lee said. "When you create a total Downtown ward, it's like a silk-stocking district. You must kiss the ring of the person who represents you. I think your voices are heard better with multiple representation."
