Firefighters: The City Council voted 13-0 to rehire 32 laid-off firefighters, effective Sept. 21, increasing the average number of firefighters from 95 daily to 105 daily, approaching the goal of 110 firefighters daily, a figure the department considers full staffing.

Tailgating: Council voted 13-0 to extend the permitted tailgating area near the Metrodome. The new ordinance allows tailgating in surface parking lots between the river and South 6th Street and between 4th and 11th avenues. Previously, the district was north of Washington Avenue. The change sunsets after one-year. Next year, the Council will review whether the change created added litter and public urination problems in surrounding neighborhoods before making it permanent.

3rd Avenue greening: Council voted 13-0 to authorize the City Engineer to enter into agreements with private companies to landscape five centerline medians along 3rd Avenue between Washington Avenue South and South 12th Street, a pilot project of Downtown Minneapolis Greening.

Nicollet Mall lights: Council voted 13-0 to accept a $25,260 bid for a Nicollet Mall lighting upgrade.

Pension debt: Council voted 11-2 to sell $18 million in pension bonds to fund a portion of the city's obligation to the Minneapolis Police Relief Association, a closed pension fund with shortfalls. Lisa Goodman (7th Ward) and Scott Benson (11th Ward) voted no.

Convention Center: Council voted 13-0 to accept a low bid of $100,315 for wall fabric at the Minneapolis Convention Center.
