Portions of 3rd Avenue South and 10th Street South Downtown will be torn up for several months later this year for total reconstruction -- new curbs, gutters, pavement and sidewalk.
Work on three blocks of 3rd Avenue -- between 5th Street South and Washington Avenue South -- is set to begin in early April and would continue until October, said Rhonda Rae, an engineer with the Public Works Department. This stretch of 3rd runs past City Hall, the Federal Courthouse, and Qwest's local headquarters.
Utility companies would need roughly 15 weeks to replace buried lines, she said. Public Works would work from roughly mid-August to the third week in October to redo the road.
Work on four blocks of 10th Street, between 3rd and Park avenues, is expected to start in mid-April and would take up to 18 weeks, Rae said. Landmarks along this stretch include the American Express Operations Center and Elliot Park's new Grant Park development. 10th street is also a major southbound entry to I-35W.
Public Works Engineer Robb Urquhart said work would keep intersections open to traffic 100 percent of the time.
"We will not designate detours," he said.
