The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will hold a public hearing on DeLaSalle’s proposed joint use athletic facility on Nicollet Island Oct. 19.

The public hearing will follow a presentation from a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), which voted 10-8 to approve a design Oct. 4. The Park Board meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the headquarters, 2117 W. River Road N.

DeLaSalle would pay for the construction and maintenance of the facility, which will include 750-seat bleachers. The fields would straddle land owned by the school and Park Board.

Proponents say a reciprocal agreement would allow the Park Board to use the fields and the DeLaSalle gym during nonschool times, as well as allow park system use of school parking.

Some residents oppose the project and the loss of park open space, and say the CAC process was rushed.

The project has several other hurdles to clear, such as gaining city approval to close half of Grove Street.
