Could Downtown be getting its third grocery? The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reported in its March 11 edition that Texas-based Whole Foods is under contract to purchase the 2.4-acre site of the Downtown Lotus Jaguar Land Rover dealership.
If built, North Loop would get an upscale grocery, joining Loring Park and the East Bank, which are each scheduled to get a Lunds in 2006.
However, it may still be a big if.
The Business Journal said the contract was confirmed by David Luther, president of Golden Valley-based Luther Automotive Group, which owns the dealership site.
Whole Foods had no comment in the Business Journal story. However, Dave Rosenberg, Whole Foods' director of Midwest marketing, told Skyway News, "We do not have a contract on the site at this time."
Like other grocers, Whole Foods has been the subject of Downtown rumors for months, if not years. Rosenberg said Whole Foods continues to look at metro locations - "we're obviously looking in Minneapolis" - but has chosen no site.
Currently, Whole Foods' only Minneapolis location is at 3060 Excelsior Blvd. near Lake Calhoun.
David Luther was unavailable to respond to Rosenberg's comments, as was Lynne Robson, who handles Luther Automotive's property.
