Land Here

In Minnesota, a place deemed "fly-over land" by the glittery club scenes of all three Coasts, and where the biggest music exports are either folksy guitar slingers or flannel-wearing punk rockers (with the exception of one or two glistening glamour pusses), it must be hard for your average hip-hopper to be heard more than a few feet from his own shower.

Yet our own Atmosphere, consisting of rapper Slug and his Rhyme Sayers Collective, has been making waves reaching out as far as the white sands of Miami Beach. Slug's deeply personal poetic musings, the overall barebones feel of Atmosphere's four albums, and - let's face it - Slug's big, brown eyes and arrhythmia-inciting pout has earned them a massive following both on the national and local scale.

Monday, Jan. 10 (Rod Stewart's Birthday!), 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11 (Naomi Judd's Birthday!), 8 p.m. 7th Street Entry, 701 1st Ave. $7 in advance, $10 at the door. 338-8388.

O Frabjous Day!

Oh, it's back again, and not a moment too soon! "Mamma Mia!" - that wonderful melding of Abba's music and high drama, is sure to chase any traces of winter-inspired depression straight out of your head. I mean, even though Abba's lyrics are terribly sardonic when it comes to matters of the heart, they're set to such cheery, toe-tapping music that they seem happy and joyful and hopeful. Which, incidentally, is how the musical comes off, too, as hinted to in their ad campaign: "A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you'll never forget!"

Starts Tuesday, Jan. 11 (Call for times.) Historic Orpheum Theatre, 910 Hennepin Ave. $23 -$75. (651) 989-5151.
