Spike Lee headlines Saturday MLK Day event

Noted filmmaker Spike Lee will be the featured speaker Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College's 15th annual "Celebrate the Dream" birthday tribute to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The annual celebration hosted by MCTC is expected to draw more than 1,800 people to the Basilica of St. Mary, 16th Street & Hennepin Avenue.

The celebration will also feature a presentation of humanitarian awards for community service in the Twin Cities and music by the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir, the Young Hands for Christ sign language ministry, the MCTC College Chamber Vocal Ensemble and teen vocalist Cameron Hughes.

KARE-11 television reporter/anchor Roxanne Battle will serve as emcee.

The Target Corp.-sponsored event starts at 7 p.m. Admission and parking in the MCTC ramp at 15th Street & Hennepin Avenue are free.

The legal holiday honoring King is Monday, Jan. 17.
