A new Toyota Yaris HOURCAR in the North Loop will become available for public use this month at the corner of North 4th Street and 6th Avenue.

An event that unveils the car on Feb. 6 will give away an iPod to one attendee, and a second iPod will go to new participants who join HOURCAR between Feb. 6 and Feb. 13.

Additional HOURCAR hubs Downtown are located at the Loring Municipal Parking Ramp at Nicollet Avenue and Grant Street; the Minneapolis Depot at Washington and 5th avenues south; a hub at Hennepin Avenue and 2nd Street Northeast, and a hub at Groveland and LaSalle avenues.

To use the HOURCAR, participants pay a $50 one-time application fee with packages of monthly dues ranging from $5 plus mileage to a flat fee of $98.

HOURCAR Program Manager Joe Zimsen said five cars serve the Downtown area with another in Loring Park, and current monthly usage ranges from an average of 30 minutes per day — 4.5 hours per day.

Zimsen said most participants make online and phone reservations the same day they use the car.

“They are able to get the car they want most of the time, and if they can’t, usually a car is nearby,” Zimsen said.

The Toyota Yaris features the highest-rated conventional gas engine for fuel efficiency, running up to 40 miles on one gallon of gas.
