The Women's Prison Book Project is hosting a 10th anniversary celebration Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Open Book, 1011 Washington Ave. S.

The Minneapolis-based volunteer-run organization sends free books and other resource to women inmates across the country in an effort to empower the prisoners and help them straighten out their lives once they're released.

The celebration, "Words Stretching Beyond Bars and Walls," will feature appearances by Leslie Ball, curator of BALLS Cabaret at the Southern Theatre; Native American poet Coya Artichoker; Emmanuel Ortiz, a community organizer and spoken-word artist; and poet Reggie Harris

Visual artist Chamindika Wanduragala will be the DJ for the night, spinning dance tunes for guests.

The event runs 7-11 p.m. Tickets are $10-$25 (though no one will be turned away for lack of funds, organizers say).
