The City of Lakes Care Center, a nursing home in the Stevens Square neighborhood south of Downtown, will move to Elliot Park's Walker Cityview nursing home.

The City of Lakes Care Center, 110 E. 18th St., plans to move residents from its 145-bed facility to Elliot Park by November. The Stevens Square facility was built in the early 1900s and has become costly to maintain.

Officials decided to close Walker Cityview, a 160-bed nursing home at 618 E. 17th St., earlier this summer. Some Walker Cityview residents have been relocated to Walker Methodist Health Center, 3737 Bryant Ave. S.

Hennepin County faces a surplus of nursing home beds since more senior citizens want alternative options, including home health care and other assisted-living programs.

The City Council's Community Planning Development Committee approved issuing $5 million in tax-exempt revenue bonds to assist the City of Lakes Care Center in relocating and renovating the Elliot Park facility. The full Council was expected to review the action at its Sept. 3 meeting, after this issue of Skyway News went to press.
