Garbage collection

On the southwest corner of North 5th Street & Nicollet Mall, a small garden and a marble bench greet those waiting for their bus. The bench meets at a corner recessed from the street where leaves and garbage have collected for the past month.

This corner has reached a new level of disgust with the arrival of a dead grackle.

A small sign shows the ownership of this corner (Opus Corp.) and the bench's 1993 birth. Opus handed over the maintenance of this area to the owner of the surface parking lot, at this same location.

According to Derek Lorenzen of Allied Parking, people wait for the bus along Nicollet and often dump their trash here. Lorenzen said that this area is "a nonstop maintenance issue."

The Hiawatha LRT project also did some work at this corner during 2002.

City spokesperson Sara Dietrich said that the city put the asphalt patch there as a temporary measure until Opus Corp. or LRT could undertake the restoration.

According to Dietrich, "The city will typically patch up any significant sidewalk crack or break if it could pose a safety risk to the public as a temporary measure until the property owner takes care of the issue."

Allied Parking immediately cleaned up the garbage and leaves after hearing from Skyway News.

Dietrich said, "Please let your readers know that whenever folks notice a sidewalk that needs repair, they should call the Sidewalk Inspections office at 673-2441. This phone is answered from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Once a problem is brought to the attention of Public Works, someone will be out to take a look at the problem as quickly as possible."
