Pedestrians have long been able to run or participate in a walk for a good cause, now river rats can canoe or kayak for one as part of the Mississippi River Challenge, a HealthPartners-sponsored benefit for environmental group Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR).

Organizers expect over 300 canoeists and kayakers to travel 44 miles from Coon Rapids to Grey Cloud Island, Minn. in the two-day, Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 7-8, event, passing through the massive Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam along the way.

Proceeds will go towards FMR's work along the Twin Cities stretch of Old Muddy, which includes keeping contaminated surface run-off from entering the river and protecting and restoring native plants, animals and the river's historical treasures.

Each participant commits to raising $200 or more in pledge funds by Friday, Aug. 6 and pays a $30 registration fee, which covers shuttles, snacks, rest stop amenities, meals and admission to Fort Snelling.

To register, sponsor a paddler or to volunteer, go to or call 651-222-2193.
