Sad lion

Pedro the Lion, a.k.a. David Bazan (at left, above), sings and write songs as though he's just seen his dog get run over again and again by a truck and been powerless to stop it. Actually, he sounds as though he has not only just watched his beloved pet get run over, but feels, deep inside, that he is being punished by God for some great transgression and so his dog had to die. It's wonderful, maudlin fun if you're into being depressed, but if you're into happy shows, this isn't the one for you.

Wednesday, June 30, 6 p.m., First Avenue, 701 1st Ave. N., $10 in advance, $12 at the door. 332-1775.

k.d. lang

I have been waiting for this show for just about forever. The wonderful, talented, inimitable, multiple-Grammy-Award-winning k.d. lang is coming to Minneapolis to perform as part of her first-ever symphony performance tour. This is probably a once-in-a-decade opportunity, getting to see lang perform with the Minnesota Orchestra -- in a place where the excellent acoustics of the room will, for once, work for her voice, instead of against it.

Tuesday, June 29, 7 p.m., Orchestra Hall, 1111 Nicollet Mall, $30-$75. 371-5656.
