Walker Cityview, a 160-bed nursing home in Elliot Park, is set to close this summer.

A surplus of nursing home beds in Hennepin County prompted the closure, said Jonathan Lundberg, Walker Methodist chief operations officer.

"The shift from providing care for seniors in a traditional nursing home setting to alternative options such as home health care and assisted living has resulted in diminished demand for nursing home beds in the Twin Cities and has caused Walker Cityview to operate at or below 90 percent occupancy for several months," Lundberg said in a prepared statement. "This has been a very difficult decision to make. The closure means our 130 residents must move."

Staff members at Walker Cityview, 618 E. 17th St., are working with residents to secure new housing, steering some of them to Walker Methodist Health Center, 3737 Bryant Ave. S.

Nursing home management is also working to find new jobs for Walker Cityview employees. The facility employs 137 people, according to a statement about the closing.

A new use for the building has not been determined. The nursing home is expected to close by July 22.
