Clare Housing is working with city officials to acquire a building next to the Calumet Lofts in Northeast for a new 22-unit affordable housing development at 115 5th St. NE.

The Northeast-based nonprofit provides services for people living with HIV/AIDS. It has six adult foster care homes, a 32-unit supportive housing development and 20 units of scattered-site housing.

The 10,890-square-foot building Clare wants to renovate for housing is a tax-forfeited property. The proposal will likely go before the City Council in early April, said Cherie Shoquist, principal project coordinator for the city's Community Planning and Economic Development Department.

Depending on financing and the timing of approvals, Clare Housing would start construction in 2013 on the project, said the organization's executive director Lee Lewis.

"This is the first time we're doing a rehab of an existing building. It's exciting," he said.
