Dunn Bros franchisee John Gifford said he has plans to add some "Australian flair" to the skyways with a new coffee shop in the TCF Tower, 800 Marquette Ave., opening Thursday, March 18.

"Personally, I've always wanted to have something in the Downtown area; it's important for new businesses to open up in Downtown. It's what keeps it alive," Gifford said, who also runs a Dunn Bros near the Stone Arch Bridge. "I'm a Downtown person. I like the feeling that a vibrant Downtown has. I've always been fascinated with the skyway system. It has a character all of its own. It's like a really busy Downtown street."

Gifford, president of Austral Enterprises, said he took in an interest in Dunn Bros after leaving corporate America, which he said didn't suit his style.

"I like Dunn Bros because they're different. ... They let you put your own feel and flavor into the store," he said.

As for the new skyway location, Gifford has plans for a laid-back atmosphere with an earthy d/cor with vibrant colors, such as fiery orange. A beanbag with Dunn Bros coffee beans will be attached to the wall.

There will be free wireless access and two computer terminals in the coffee shop, plus seating for about 10 customers.

Hours are tentatively set for Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m.
