The City Council is expected to approve the newest critical-parking area later this month, located in Loring Park between I-94 and the Minneapolis Community and Technical College parking ramp at North 16th Street and Hennepin Avenue South.

Residents petitioned for the designation. It allows them to buy permits to park for extended periods of time, while limiting nonresident parking.

The critical-parking area would create a one-hour parking zone from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday along:

  • The north side of Laurel Avenue, between North 15th and North 16th streets and the south side of Laurel between Hennepin and North 16th.

  • The west side of North 15th between Laurel and Hawthorne avenues.

  • The south side of Hawthorne between North 15th and North 16th.

The new critical-parking area would create a two-hour parking zone from 8 a.m-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, along the eastside of North 15th Street from Laurel to Hawthorne.

The city would also increase meter rates on nearby blocks from 50 cents an hour to $1 an hour.

The City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee approved the critical-parking area March 2. The full Council will vote on it Friday, March 19.
