Only in its second season, Minneapolis’ street food explosion shows no signs of slowing down. Downtown diners should look for another new lunch option this week: Mr. Mustachios, a new food truck serving fish tacos, sliders and more.
Co-owned by Nomad World Pub manager Kevin Kane, the Mr. Mustachios truck had its final inspection today. Kane hopes that means he’ll be on the streets later this week, and plans to offer lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. weekdays on or around Nicollet Mall. He also plans to set up one day a week outside ad agency Periscope, 921 Washington Avenue S, as well as outside the Minnesota Public Radio offices in St. Paul.
After lunch service, the Mr. Mustachios truck will usually be found at the Nomad World Pub. Kane said that having a “home base” will help the business thrive, and it will also be found at events around The Nomad’s Cedar Riverside neighborhood. He cited outdoor shows at The Cedar Cultural Center as one place he plans to set up shop.
The initial offerings on the trucks menu include fish tacos with locally sourced ingredients, Belgian-style fries and sliders that are pan-seared and finished in French onion soup. Kane will also feature a variation of an ice cream sandwich for dessert with ice cream sandwiched between Rice Krispy treats. Additional options may be added to the menu later. “The great thing about a food truck is that you can play it by ear,” said Kane.
But what’s up with that name? Kane laughs at the question. He started drawing up plans for the business back in November – when men around Minneapolis were participating in “Movember,” the charity moustache-growing event. “The fact that I can’t grow a moustache became an inside joke,” said Kane. “I guess now it’s going to be a public joke.”
