Since 2002, the first Saturday in May has been Free Comic Book Day, during which hundreds of comic book stores around the country give away special-edition comics books for free. The event was created by the comic book industry to introduce new readers to comic books, bring lapsed readers back into stores and to thank existing customers for their support.

Each year, comic book publishers big and small produce exclusive books for Free Comic Book Day. This year’s titles include big names like a Green Lantern movie tie-in, The Amazing Spiderman, Kung Fu Panda and Mickey Mouse. On the other end of the spectrum, participants will also be able to grab acclaimed small press comics such as Mouse Guard and Locke & Key.
