City College News, Minneapolis Community and Technical College's newspaper, was recently besieged with calls from the news bureaus of ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.
The Downtown paper on the 1501 Hennepin Ave. S. campus, had decided to turn over, free-of-charge, an exclusive picture of Mohamed Warsame, a local Somali man and former MCTC student being charged by federal investigators for conspiring to give material support to a foreign terrorist organization, in this case Al-Queda.
According to City College News editor-in-chief, Tom Carothers (who is also a Skyway News intern) the photo had been taken by an MCTC student who once worked with the paper. The photo shows Warsame from the side doing his homework in a friend's apartment.
As far as Carothers knows and as the calls from the major media suggest, no other news agency had a picture of Warsame.
Carothers said the background was blurred to protect the identity of other students in the shot. As a result, newspapers declined the photo. "However, TV news had no problem with it," he said.
"It's not often a two-year community college paper with a $7,000 yearly budget can scoop everyone, but we did it!" Carothers said.
