Hip gifts for baby

Pacifier is one of those stores that you didn’t know Minneapolis needed until it opened. Geared toward selling unique baby gifts and cool clothing, the store is a lot hipper than Baby Gap and makes shopping for those in their terrible twos a lot easier to handle.

Although the main store is located in Northeast on East Hennepin, the second site in Gaviidae Common is still a great place to find perfect gifts for the 10-and-under crowd.

One of Pacifier’s biggest hits this year is a line of toys made by a company called simply Green Toy. The collection features toys made in California from 100-percent recycled milk containers in an attempt to reduce plastic waste. The toys are non-toxic and one of the most environmentally friendly gifts of the season. There are several options too, from fire trucks and recycling trucks (of course) to a set of construction tools or dishes. The dishes are so popular that Green Toys is making an actual, real-life dish set sometime soon. You can rest easy knowing that even the toy dishes meet FDA food contact standards and all toys are BPA free. The Green Toy line ranges from $20–$35.

Another popular item is an assortment of dolls named the BlaBla dolls. These figures come in various shapes and sizes and are hand knitted in Peru from 100-percent cotton. BlaBlas feature the looks of famous people such as Johnny Ramone, Dr. Watson and Gretel (from Hansel and Gretel) as well as animals including dogs, cats and monkeys. The dolls look adorable and are extremely soft, the perfect gift for any toddler. BlaBla prices range from $29–$37

A gift that gives back

The IDS Center is home to many thriving retailers and you can find pretty much anything for anybody on your gift list.

This year, not only can you find the right gift but you’ll feel good doing it too. That’s the idea behind Twice the Gift, a store that allows nonprofit organizations can put their wares up for sale. The store gives all sale proceeds back to the nonprofit organization that supplied the gifts, making it easier than ever to support local nonprofits. The store also offers Share Cards, for the person in your life who already has everything. These cards recognize a donation made in the recipient’s name to a certain nonprofit.

The store features more than 350 products, both globally and locally supplied by 55 area nonprofit organizations, such as Free Arts Minnesota, Homeward Bound and Tix for Tots.

This year, the hot item at Twice the Gift is a messenger bag sold by the Hennepin Theater Trust. The bag is themed after the insanely popular play “Wicked,” which had a sellout August through mid-September. What makes the bag unique from other messenger bags is that its cover is made out of the actual play banners that adorned the theater. Featuring the signature green and black of the book cover and theater posters, the bag is unmistakably Wicked and you can’t get much more authentic.

The bag also has a standard messenger-bag strap and offers plenty of room for your files, papers or play guides. At $45, it’s around the same price as other messenger bags but Wicked fans would probably agree that owning a piece of the well-loved play is worth considerably more. The best part is that your purchase goes right back to the Hennepin Theater Trust and could even help them put Wicked through another run.
