Residents living north of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) parking ramp have petitioned the city for a critical parking area.

The residents want to "reduce on-street parking congestion caused by the vehicles of commuter, student, customer or visitor/guest vehicles generated by area businesses, institutions or recreation/entertainment facilities," the petition said.

The critical parking designation would limit parking to one hour between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday but allow residents to buy permits and park for longer periods.

The requested area is: The north side of Laurel Avenue between North 15th and North 16th streets; the south side of Laurel Avenue between Hennepin Avenue and North 16th Street; the west side of North 15th Street between Laurel and Hawthorne avenues, and the south side of Hawthorne from North 15th and North 16th streets.

Petitions included signatures of people in 83 percent of the affected dwelling units, or 107 of 129. Petitioners only needed to get 75 percent. Public Works Department staff will review the request and report back to the City Council's Transportation and Public Works Committee.
