The Loring Park-based American Refugee Committee sent a humanitarian relief team to Haiti today.

The team has expertise in emergency relief and logistics, according to a statement sent out by the committee today.

It includes Monte Achenbach, senior director of programs, who has lived and worked in Haiti. He has experience helping with relief efforts after the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. He will be joined by Michael Barringer-Mills, field support manager, who has worked on humanitarian projects in Darfur, Sudan.

Achenbach and Barringer-Mills will later be joined by technical teams for the relief work.

"The magnitude of this tragedy is staggering, and many more thousands of lives are at risk due to lack of clean water, food and health care," said Achenbach. "We are ready to help."

Haiti was rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday.
