An official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. today marked the opening of the new Minneapolis Passport Agency.

The event, located at 212 3rd Ave. S., featured remarks by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Under Secretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy and Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Janice Jacobs.

The Minneapolis Passport Agency is the 21st passport facility opened to the public and will offer the full range of passport services, including production of the new passport card.

“The Minneapolis Passport Agency will improve our ability to meet the travel needs of U.S. citizens along the northern border,” Minneapolis Passport Agency Regional Director Robert DeWitt stated in a press release.

DeWitt said the agency plans to hire additional staff to meet the anticipated demand for U.S. passport services in Minnesota and surrounding states.

Accepting appointments for customers planning to travel outside the United States within 14 days, the agency can issue both the traditional U.S. Passport Book and the new credit-card size U.S. Passport Card to qualifying customers.
