The Twins are in first place, the Olympics are only four days away and — just when it seems the sports news can’t get any more exciting — here come the 2008 Hospitality Games.

Eleven teams representing the hospitality staffs of metro-area hotels and the Minneapolis Convention Center will go head-to-head in events that test their speed, strength and cleaning ability, including the buffer pad toss relay and bed-making competition. The opening ceremony is 2 p.m. today at the convention center.

The second annual competition, sponsored by Meet Minneapolis, coincides with International Housekeeping Week. It is a chance for cleaning crews to test their skills a month before the biggest hospitality event of the year in the Twin Cities, the Republic National Convention.

The competition will take place in Exhibit Hall C at the convention center. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m.
