June 23–27 is Convention Volunteer Sign-Up Week

Still a long way from their goal of recruiting 10,000 volunteers for the Republican National Convention in September, the convention host committee promised Monday to roll out the red carpet for their top volunteer recruiter.

Mayor R.T. Rybak joined with St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman to declare June 23–27 Convention Volunteer Sign-Up Week and introduce the Red Carpet Convention Package, a prize for the top recruiter. The person who brings in the most volunteers before the July 15 deadline will win tickets to three insider events not open to the public.

About 6,000 people already have committed to volunteer for the convention, to be held Sept. 1–4 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. But that means nearly 4,000 people are still needed to help out with transportation, security, hospitality and other guest services when, it is expected, nearly 45,000 people converge on the Twin Cities for the convention.

Applicants for a volunteer position must be 18 years old or older, pass a background security check and attend convention orientation and training sessions.
Only those who recruit at least 25 volunteers by the deadline will be eligible for the Red Carpet Convention Package. The package includes tickets to the Aug. 30 media party, the Aug. 31 delegate party and the Host Committee welcome reception on the first day of the convention, Sept. 1.

A winner will be announced Aug. 13.

To apply for the package send an email to: volunteer@msp2008.com.

There are volunteer sign-up events planned this week through Friday, including 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Thursday at the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market, 312 E. Lyndale Ave. N. Anyone interested in volunteering for the convention can sign-up online or find information on other volunteer recruiting events at the Host Committee website, www.msp2008.com.
