Citizen first responders to the Interstate 35W bridge collapse are invited to a Hennepin County-sponsored conference Tuesday night at the Minneapolis Central Library.

Healing from Disaster is an attempt to address the lingering trauma those who rushed to the disaster scene may still experience. An open invitation to the event described heightened anxiety, fear and intrusive thoughts as “normal reactions to abnormal events.”

Speakers at the event will help citizen first responders resolve unanswered questions from that day and understand their emotional responses to the disaster. The list of speakers includes representatives from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the United Way and emergency behavioral health professional Charles Cook, a licensed social worker who counseled survivors of Hurricane Katrina and other high-profile disasters.

Healing from Disaster is 7 p.m.–8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Minneapolis Central Library, 300 Nicollet Mall. Parking is available at the library from 4th Street.
