The Minneapolis DFL precinct caucuses on April 16 drew 4,730 attendees, according to a preliminary report from the Minneapolis DFL.

Delegates are elected to the ward conventions and the City Convention at the precinct caucuses. They get a chance to vote in the endorsement process.

The highest turnout was in the Third Ward, which includes neighborhoods in downtown and northeast Minneapolis. There were 742 attendees at caucuses in the ward, according to Dan McConnell, chair of the Minneapolis DFL.

City Council Member Diane Hofstede, who is seeking a third term on the Council representing the Third Ward, is facing competition from Jacob Frey, an attorney and community organizer.

The city’s 6th Ward had the second highest turnout with 703 attendees at caucuses. City Council Vice President Robert Lilligren has two challengers for the Council seat — Abdi Warsame and Mahamed Cali. The 6th Ward includes neighborhoods south of downtown.

The third highest turnout was in the 10th Ward with 577 people showing up to caucuses. The 10th Ward includes neighborhoods in the Uptown area. Three candidates — Lisa Bender, Ken Bradley and Kendal Killian — are running against incumbent City Council Member Meg Tuthill and vying for the DFL endorsement.

Caucus goers also elected 1,663 delegates to the City Convention on June 15 along with 707 alternates. Endorsements for mayor, Park Board and the Board of Estimate and Taxation are considered at the City Convention.
