Today Ryan Cos. will begin removing the six medallions that adorn the façade of Star Tribune headquarters at 425 Portland Ave S.
The medallions will be preserved and stored by Ryan while the city of Minneapolis figures where and how to display them in the future. They could end up being installed in the new two-block park that will be built at the site of the Star Tribune headquarters after it is torn down.
The medallion removal is considered the first step in preparing the building for demolition. The “Star and Tribune Company” stone lettering plastered across the top of the building will also be preserved.
A historic narrative, including photos, is being developed by Preservation Design Works and is scheduled to be completed by May 1.
