Downtown homeless shelter People Serving People is collecting school supplies for students who stay at the shelter in anticipation for the upcoming school year.

The shelter at 614 3rd St. N. provides emergency shelter for 3,400 children and their families each year. It's the region's largest shelter for homeless families.

Children make up more than 60 percent of the guests at People Serving People and during the school year 30 to 40 buses arrive at the shelter each morning to pick up children for school.

People Serving People CEO Daniel Gumnit said focusing on education is a critical way to help a family experiencing homelessness.

"For them to succeed in school, they need basic supplies all of us parents go out and buy each fall for our kids so they can come prepared to learn," he said.
