Developer tabled plans after tenant troubles, but Dunn Bros is moving in next door

A new, three-story commercial development planned for the surface parking lot at 901 Washington Ave. S has been put on hold indefinitely.

Developer Mike Roess planned to put up a new building housing Mexican restaurant chain Hussong’s Cantina in the ground and top floor, with an upscale furniture store positioned on the second floor. Those plans fell through after Roess decided Hussong’s was a bad fit for the neighborhood and the furniture store’s credit wasn’t up to par.

“Hussong’s decided not to move forward with an expansion into Minnesota and we felt the menu wasn’t consistent with the neighborhood and the Guthrie crowd,” said Roess. “There would’ve been too much drinking, that’s what it boiled down to.”

Roess said he’s still planning to develop the lot, which sits next to the 903 Washington building he owns.

That building is home to two restaurants, Wasabi Fusion and Sanctuary, and soon Dunn Bros will move into the old Shabu Wasabi space next to Wasabi Fusion.

Shabu Wasabi was built as an annex to Wasabi Fusion, but the concept was unsuccessful.
