NORTH LOOP — Construction has started on a six-story apartment building that will wrap around the Fulton Brewery at 600 5th St. N.

The project known as District 600 will feature 78 apartments and a retail space designed for a restaurant. The apartments are expected to be ready for tenants by the summer of 2014.

The partners behind the project include Michael Development, St. Croix Real Estate, Residential Renewal, Collage Architects and Stonebridge Construction.

"This development was planned in response to the demand for competitively prices apartments in the downtown area," said Terry McNellis, a principal at St. Croix Real Estate.

The apartments are going up in a section of the North Loop seeing intense development. It's across the street from the Interchange, a new multimodal transit station and community gathering area under construction next to Target Field, and the Junction Flats, a 182-unit apartment development that just broke ground.
