The Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association endorsed Mortenson Development's plans for a new 210-room Hampton Inn & Suites hotel at 8th Street North & 1st Avenue North at the group's board meeting earlier this evening.
The hotel would be nine stories and go up next to the Pence Building at 800 Hennepin Ave. S. The city would be obligated to deconstruct a portion of a skyway connecting a parking ramp to the Pence Building to make way for the new hotel, which would be built to accomodate the skyway. An estimate on how much cost the city would incur by deconstructing the skyway has not been determined. A Mortenson representative said the developer would take on the expense of rebuilding the skyway.
Downtown-based ESG Architects is also working on the project, which will be designed to blend in with other buildings in the Warehouse District.
The hotel proposal will now work its way through the city-approval process.
