Fox Sports North (FSN) is trying to get city approval to install an outdoor video board wrapping around the corner of Hennepin Avenue and Eighth Street outside of its LaSalle Plaza headquarters.
The proposed video board measures five feet, six inches tall and would be placed 25 feet in the air, right above the skyway spanning Hennepin.
City zoning code only allows for dynamic signs to be placed up to 14 feet high, and the board’s 64 square feet of total area doubles the zoning code’s limit.
FSN’s proposal will go before the Zoning Board of Adjustment on May 15 to ask for variances that would allow it to skirt the restrictions. City staff has recommended to deny those requests.
Last year FSN pulled a similar request to install a larger, 105-square-foot video board after the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association (DMNA) refused to support it. The DMNA supports this scaled-back proposal.
FSN moved into its new LaSalle Plaza headquarters in 2012 and has a massive screen projecting its programming into the skyway.
