The first major construction activity for the new Vikings stadium has started today.

Crews are excavating and hauling dirt from the parking lot on the east side of the Metrodome.

Trucks will be hauling from the lot bordered by South Fourth Street and 11th Avenue almost constantly for the next four months. Construction hours are 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday.

A short, direct route to the freeway has been established for the trucks. They will come in from 3rd Avenue, make a left on Norman McGrew Place, then a left on South 4th Street directly into the site. Upon leaving the site, the trucks will take South 4th Street to 35W South.

Mortensen is planning on hosting a community meeting in January to discuss any concerns developed during the first month of construction, although a date and time has not been set. An official groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow at 10 a.m. on the east side of the Metrodome.
