Two upcoming North Loop festivals will celebrate the crustacean

August is packed with special celebrations throughout downtown, and if you’re a fan of crayfish — you’re in luck.

There are two upcoming festivals in the North Loop featuring crayfish. The Bachelor Farmer is hosting its second annual summer crayfish party called Kraftskiva on Aug. 3, 5–10 p.m., outside its restaurant at 1st Street North & 2nd Avenue North, and the following weekend on Aug. 10, the Smack Shack is planning Crayfest 2013 — an event featuring a traditional Louisiana crawfish boil.

The Bachelor Farmer block party will feature music by DJ Jonathan Ackerman, Joey Ryan & the Inks and the Cloak Ox. Besides crayfish, there will be meatballs, snow cones, sweet corn, beer and aquavit.

Crayfest 2013 will run from noon to 8 pm. outside the Smack Shack at 6th & Washington. The restaurant is teaming up with the Fish Guys on the event and to raise awareness about the threat of the invasive Rusty Crayfish, which are threatening native crayfish and reptiles.

Bands lined up for the event include Year of the Horse, The Devine Collection, Root City Band, Hard Luck and Tambuca. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at www.tix.com.

Not far from Crayfest, Cuzzy’s will host the first annual North Loop Fest on Aug. 10, which will feature all kinds of activities to celebrate the fast-growing neighborhood, including the TC Urban Dash — an urban challenge race.

Other noteworthy festivals in August include the Loring Park Art Festival, which features 140 visual artists in the park Aug. 3 & 4; the Pizza Luce Block Party at its Warehouse District location Aug. 10, noon–10 p.m.; and the Red Stag Block Party on Aug. 3, 5–10:30 p.m.
