A community meeting to update the public on the Superior Plating pollution cleanup effort will be held Aug. 26, 5:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
State Senator Kari Dziedzic, State Rep. Phyllis Kahn and Ward 3 City Council Member Jacob Frey will be in attendance, along with representatives from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Department of Health and surrounding neighborhood associations.
A number of setbacks and surprises has caused the project’s cost to rise, and yellow contaminated water continues to pool onsite every time it rains. For now, site owner First and University Investors (FUI) is paying to remove the contaminated water and treat it at a wastewater facility in Roseville. FUI and the MPCA continue to negotiate over a final solution to the cleanup effort so that the site can be redeveloped.
Jeff Meehan, who chairs the Nicollet Island East Bank Neighborhood Association’s Superior Plating Remediation Committee, said FUI has been invited to the meeting, but they are not scheduled as participants.
