There will be an open house at the Whittier Recreation Center on Thursday, June 19, 5:30–7:30 p.m., to brief the community on proposed transit improvements for I-35W near Lake Street.

Representatives from Hennepin County, the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota Department of Transportation and Metro Transit will present updated proposals for the multi-level enclosed bus rapid transit station at both the freeway and Lake Street levels; physical improvements to Lake Street in the vicinity of the I-35W interchange; and proposed ramps at the I-35W interchange.

Jennifer Hager, principal professional engineer for the City of Minneapolis, said there will be updated maps and graphics that will reflect input from the public on the proposed changes.

“We are looking for feedback on how these elements will fit together to produce the most benefits for the surrounding commercial area and neighborhoods,” Hager said.

Jim Grube, Hennepin County transportation department director, said the county is working on improving all transportation modes at I-35W and Lake Street.

“Our focus has been to ensure a safe, convenient and attractive environment for pedestrians and bicyclists that enhances and increases transit use,” Grube said. “Also, we want to upgrade Lake Street to better serve traffic access and transportation needs in the area.”
