A new restaurant featuring a large selection of craft beers and inexpensive burgers will be opening sometime this winter at the corner of 1st Ave. NE and University Ave.

JL Beers is expanding to the Twin Cities after opening six location in North Dakota, South Dakota and Moorhead since 2009.

The restaurant will be a 21+ venue and will have dozens of craft beers from around the country on tap.

Its food menu is similar to Five Guys or Smashburger, with a variety of burgers available for under $5 and toppings, dips, fries and chips available as add-ons.

JL Beers will be run by Mike Wright, Ted Coulter and John Glockner, three longtime friends with decades of retail and restaurant experience.

Wright owns five Famous Dave’s locations in St. Cloud and the Dakotas, including the 2011 Famous Dave’s restaurant of the year in Sioux Falls. Coulter has worked for Wright since 2001, and Glockner is the former vice-president of Patio Town and a high school friend of Wright’s.

Next spring they anticipate opening a small patio in front of the restaurant.
