Fire Department facing spike in injuries


The Minneapolis Fire Department has experienced an increase in injuries among firefighters — a trend putting financial pressure on a department facing other staffing challenges as more firefighters are approaching retirement.

Minneapolis Fire Chief John Fruetel said the department's Worker's Compensations costs for injured firefighters have reached $2.4 million, nearly doubling since 2011, during a presentation before the City Council's Ways & Means Budget Subcommittee earlier today.
