Homeless Downtowners now find shelter during the day

Minneapolis emergency shelters now have the option to stay open during the day, providing relief for hundreds of the city's homeless.

The Minneapolis City Council passed an amendment to city zoning code Dec. 2 allowing shelters to stay open 24 hours a day. Before the change, shelters could only open between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m.

Homeless shelter operators, however, have discretion to set their hours and are not required to extend them, under the amendment authored by City Councilmember Lisa Goodman (Ward 7).
