County Board OKs sales tax for Downtown ballpark

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners has signed off on a countywide sales tax increase to finance the new Twins ballpark slated for Downtown’s North Loop neighborhood.

The 4-3 vote on Aug. 29 came after months of contentious debate pitting stadium supporters against those who called for a referendum on the tax increase and questioned the appropriateness of using tax dollars to help pay for a new ballpark.

The county ordinance establishes a 0.15 percent sales and use tax for the new ballpark — a 42,000-seat, open-air stadium expected to open in 2010.
