Superintendent aims to eliminate suspension disparities

In an effort to understand and erase a troubling racial disparity in suspension rates, Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson pledged in November to review with her leadership team every suspension of a student of color for non-violent behavior.

Johnson, who earlier this year put a moratorium on the suspension of the district’s youngest students, said she wants to “disrupt the cycle” of students of color facing harsher discipline. She aims to eliminate the uneven use of suspensions by 2018.

“This has been going on too long,” she said.
