Charter high school may open downtown

ELLIOT PARK — A charter-school authorizer backed by the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers is eyeing a downtown location for one of its first schools.

The team behind Mill City High School wants to be able to pitch prospective students on a downtown Minneapolis campus just a one-block walk from the nearest light rail hub. That’s why they’re in talks with First Covenant Church to open next fall in a wing of the church building that dates to 1937.

“We want to be downtown,” John Miller, the school’s start-up director, said.
