Reflecting on a superintendency


As they turned in early assessments of Bernadeia Johnson’s legacy in December, both supporters and critics of the outgoing Minneapolis Public Schools superintendent could agree on one thing: she had one of the toughest jobs in the city.

Johnson launched major initiatives to shrink the district’s central office and shift more power and resources to schools. But there was frustratingly slow progress toward raising student achievement and eliminating the district’s disparities, as the School Board noted in her annual performance review this fall.
